What is a Body Composition Analyzer?

Body Composition Analyzer

A number on a scale only goes so far in determining a healthy weight for you. Everyone is different, since we all have a unique body composition as well as a different percentage and distribution of body fat and muscle mass. That’s why the unique information provided by a Body Composition Analyzer is such a valuable tool in helping your weight loss efforts. In this blog, Dr. Shawna Purcell of Capital Diabetes & Weight Loss Center in Olympia, WA explains what a Body Composition Analyzer is as well as how it can help you:

What is a Body Composition Analyzer?

A Body Composition Analyzer is a scan that’s used to gain specific information about your body composition. It provides valuable data that includes your percentage of body fat and muscle mass, your basal metabolic rate, and the amount of visceral fat (fat stored within the abdominal cavity) you have.

How does it work?

This type of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) works by sending a small, harmless alternating current through your body as you stand on the Body Composition Analyzer. It then is able to provide data specific to you.

What makes the Inbody Body Composition Analyzer different from other body analyzers?

This advanced machine provides detailed, precise information about your body’s composition, allowing you to learn about any changes in your body over time. Unlike other analyzers, it utilizes the following:

  • Direct segmental multi-frequency BIA – accurately measures your body parts individually instead of as a whole. This allows for accurate measurement of your trunk, which has low resistance compared to your arms and legs.
  • Multiple frequencies – accurately measures water contents inside and outside your cells separately. The use of six different frequencies provides precise information on each segment of your body.
  • 8-point tactile electrodes with thumb electrodes – allows measurement to always begin at a fixed point in the wrist and ankles, producing accurate measurements because the contact resistance from the skin has been removed
  • Excludes empirical estimations – instead of using values obtained through observation, InBody takes separate measurements of the trunk, arms, and legs to get accurate results

What are the advantage of using this technology?

The analyzer helps determine a starting point for your medical weight loss plan as well as precisely measuring your progress after you’ve made changes. It allows you to obtain immediate and accurate results and a detailed analysis, all in one office visit. As you progress toward your weight loss and fitness goals, the analyzer will provide specific data that enables you and your doctor to make any adjustments needed to achieve the best possible results.
